Uganda’s Electoral Commission has this afternoon declared incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the winner of February 18, 617,503 representing 60.75% of the total valid votes cast.
Museveni’s closest and four-time challenge for the highest office in the land and his former personal physician Dr. Kizza Besigye polled 3,270,290 votes representing 35.37% of the votes.
The other six contestants including Museveni’s former ally and prime minister Amama Mbabazi registered an insignificant number of votes. Mbabazi got 132,574 representing just 1.43% of the total votes cast.
But the 2016 presidential elections have been characterised by lots of irregularities including delayed delivery of voting materials especially in Kampala, Wakiso and Masaka, strongholds of the opposition candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye.
