Uganda faces a monumental task of putting together a memorable and exemplary 64th Commonwealth Parliament Conference come September.
According to the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Akbar Khan, Uganda should strive to set the bar for organising future Commonwealth Parliamentary Conferences.
The next CPC is set to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in 2020.
Fortunately, during his recent visit Mr. Khan expressed satisfaction with the progress that had so far been made .
He said: “The planning looks very positive and all we need is to move to the venues and allocate meeting areas appropriately so that people with disabilities are well taken care of,” he noted, adding that, “We need to make sure we set the bar for the next meeting,” he said.
The Uganda Branch Representative for CPA Africa Region and also Vice Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, Hon. Jalia Bintu assured Khan of government’s commitment to ensuring the success of the conference.
Hon. Jalia Bintu said that government had ring-fenced finances for the conference. “We have secured money from the government to facilitate the event and set up committees to make sure protocol, media, transportation and accommodation are taken care of,” she said.
Besides securing funding, Mr. Khan learned that several committees have been set up to coordinate the preparations. These include the sub-committee for Media and Publicity, subcommittee for protocol, transportation and accommodation.
Hon. Paul Amoru, the Chairperson of the Media and Publicity Subcommittee assured Khan that the conference is set to be broadcast live to both local and international audiences on print, electronic and social media.
