The Minister of Agriculture, Animal industry and Fisheries Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja has pleaded with veterinary doctors to respect their calling by being available in the communities where they operate.

The Minister said that veterinary professionals need to participate in the activities that contribute to the development of the country and also support public health.

In a speech that was read for him by his junior and State Minister of Agriculture Christopher Kyabazanga during the opening of the Uganda Veterinary Association Symposium and Annual General Meeting at Golf Course Hotel this week, Ssempijja said that communities need the services of these professionals.

“We need the number of the cows’ in Uganda to increase from the current 15 million to 30 million in near future and this shall be based on your services especially combating diseases,” said Ssempijja.

Ssempijja said that veterinarians play a critical role in supporting the development of efficient and revitalized livestock growth.

“They give health services to cattle keepers, poultry farmers, which has availed enough food for the present and future generations,” he said.

The Symposium was organized under the theme: Revitalizing the veterinary profession to meet societal needs. Ssempijja added that in order to attain good services from scientists; they need to be highly respected.”
