Makindye West Member of Parliament (MP) Allan Ssewanyana was yesterday released on police bond after spending two days in custody in Nagalama Ppolice station.
Ssewanyana was arrested on Monday following his protest against the bad odour coming from Kiruddu hospital sewerage system.
In his demonstration, Ssewanyana wanted to close down the hospital demanding the authorities to explain why the system was in such a state yet money (Shs3bn) to work on it was approved by the parliament, however, police didn’t allow him to do so and was arrested.
As parliament was sitting today, Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze asked State Minister for Internal Affairs, Mario Obiga Kania to explain to the house the safety and welfare of Allan Ssewanya who was arrested during a demonstration in Makindye. This demonstration resulted from the failure of the Ministry of Health to construct a lagoon at Kiruddu Hospital in January as promised
Nambooze said “Allan has been detained at Nagalama Police Station which has a toilet break down. My prayer is for the Speaker to set laws against the arrest of MPs without informing the office of the Speaker as their patron.”
This prompted deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah to call minister Kania to explain the status of the case. Kania informed parliament that Ssewanyana has no right to close a government facility whatsoever. He added that the Officers who arrested him proceeded legally and it’s not for the person arrested to choose where to be detained.
This prompted Oulanyah to adjourn the house giving Kania time to get clear information about Ssewanyana, however upon his return to the floor, Kania informed the house that Ssewanyana had been legally released on police bond.
Ssewanyana was charged with unlawful society under case number of CRB 281/2019 of Katwe and will appear before Kampala south regional CID officers at 10 am on February 22
