The Electoral Commission (EC) has launched the strategic plan and roadmap for the 2020/2021 general elections.
The road map will guide mobilisation and sensitisation of Ugandans who intend to participate in the elections either as candidates or voters.
In developing the strategic plan, the EC considered how to avoid or tackle challenges that were faced during the 2015/2016 general elections.
Delayed amendment of Electoral laws, inadequate training of temporary election officials and funding pressure on the side of the government are among the challenges that the commission and stakeholders faced then.
It has been revealed that the government will support the electoral process through phase funding in order to reduce funding pressure.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, while launching the strategic plan and roadmap at Hotel Africana, said: “About the money, government is ready to pay all costs to see that we provide the financial support ahead of the elections.”
Meanwhile, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the EC chairperson has advised political parties to strategize in time for a peaceful Elections season.
“I urge political parties and organisations to use the plan and roadmap to make adequate preparations for successful participation in the elections. I further urge the political parties to pursue peaceful co-existence before, during and after the electoral process,” Byabakama said.
