The Minister for Kampala Betty Namisango Kamya has ordered for the immediate demolition of buildings that were illegally constructed.
While addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre on October 1, 2018, Kamya said: “I direct KCCA [Kampala Capital City Authority] with the help of Police to carry out demolition of all illegal buildings that were constructed and those under construction without permits.”
Kamya categorized the buildings to be demolished as those without permits, parking provisions, lodges next to schools, night clubs in residential area, and kiosks erected in road reserves and public areas.
Moses Atwine, the Director Physical planning at KCCA, said section 33 of the Physical Planning Act, 2010 provides that a person shall not carry out a development without obtaining development permission from a physical planning committee.
Atwine added: “There are over 500 illegal buildings in Kampala and my office has issued over 500 notices to different building owners and occupiers.”
Last month the KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi ordered for the demolition of over 200 buildings in Kampala but was stopped by Kamya citing harmonization with landlords before demolition.
