The outspoken Arua Municipality Member of Parliament Col. Ibrahim Abiriga has been shot dead this evening as he was returning home near Kawanda on the Kampala-Bombo road, the Police has confirmed.

Abiriga, famously known as ‘Yellow Man’ for his spirited defence of NRM positions in Parliament as well as for dressing in yellow head to toe, was shot dead along with his bodyguard a few minutes to 7pm, by people who were travelling on boda boda.

The police said its still investigating motives behind Abiriga’s death. His death comes two days after President Museveni assured the country that the government would protect the security of citizens. He linked recent cases of rampant kidnaps and the murder of former AIDP Andrew Felix Kawesi to the Allied Defence Forces (ADF).

The timing of Abiriga’s murder, on the eve of the Liberation Day celebrations, has added further urgency to the government’s efforts to find the motives of the killers.

The MPs death is also likely to take one a regional dimension especially since Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is already in the country.
