Local governments across the country now have some form of equipment to enable them carry out periodic maintenance of roads. However, most of the rural roads remain in a dire state following failure by the local governments to repair them.

While in Sironko district recently, President Yoweri Museveni did not mince his words when he told residents not to blame him over the poor state of the roads but rather to blame the district engineers.

Museveni made the remarks while addressing residents who had converged at Masaba senior secondary school in Sironko district.

Museveni said that the district engineers have for a long-time failed to identify the natural resources like rocks that are in plenty with in the district to be used in low cost construction of roads.

He promised that the government will soon embark on blasting the rocks so as to create raw materials to help in construction of several roads in Sironko district so as to improve on tourism which has become one of the major economic activities for the district.

Museveni further revealed that government has finally obtained funds to embark on the  construction of the long awaited Namagumba-Budadiri-Nalugugu road.

Meanwhile Museveni who also had come to visit the survivors of the recent Bufupa landslides, called upon the minister of agriculture to start training residents of Sironko in proper soil management so as to curb soil erosion.

Museveni also called upon the residents to avoid deforestation which has stripped the mountains of the vegetation which can help to guard against land slides.

In a related development, leaders in Sironko district have requested for creation of a new district called ‘budadiri ‘district so as to scale up development with in the Elgon region.

This was revealed by the Sironko district chairperson Hebert Mulekwa who read a memo that was prepared by the district local council for the president. He also said the leaders of Sironko have welcomed the proposed Sironko Municipality which will help to scale up urbanization within Sironko district.

Mulekwa also revealed that leaders have requested for a secondary school ‘Bubolo seed school’ to be introduced in Masaba Sub County in memory of the landslide incident that befell the sub county on Aug 28, 2017 in Bufupa parish.
