The two Jobless Brotherhood (JB) members; Augustine Ojobire and Robert Mayanja, were on Tuesday evening remanded at the Jinja Magistrates’ Court for uttering defamatory and demeaning statements by calling the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, a pig.
They were remanded by John Frances Kaggwa the Jinja chief magistrate who declined to grant them bail saying he will pass his ruling on Thursday.
Kaggwa heard that Ojebire, 27, the JB eastern regional coordinator and a resident of Walukuba in Jinja Municipality and Mayanja, 36, the JB deputy national coordinator and a resident of Nakawa in Kampala during a radio talk show on NBS Radio station in Jinja incited violence in the general public against the speaker Kadaga.
The accused denied the allegations and charges preferred against them asking court to grant them a non -cash bail since they were not violent and are also jobless.
Prosecution led by Shamim Nalule, a State Attorney told court that even if the duo incited non-physical violence, when given bail they would further incite more violence in the public.
Nalule accused them of being non cooperative during arrest and rejecting to make statements while at Jinja Central Police Station.
“If given bail they will proceed with their behaviour in public, they were uncooperative to Police and also have other pending cases to answer of common nuisance and public disorder,” she said.
She cited the cases as CRB 1234/2016 in Kampala, CRB 115/2015 and CRB 856/2016 in Jinja. “It’s our humble submission that if released on bail they shall commit other offences yet investigations are not complete,” she said, adding that the duo will put court at risk of wasting tax payers’ money in case they are granted bail and fail to return to court.
They were remanded in Kirinya Prisons until Thursday, 29th September. JB national coordinator, Norman Tumuhimbise, urged members to remain calm but said this will not stop them for fighting for people rights.
