The Ministry of Health is scheduled to start vaccinating people against the yellow fever disease in Masaka and Rukungiri as a way to contain the outbreak of the disease that has already claimed two people in Masaka district.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Health, the procurement of vaccines is already in advanced stages.
“According to the World Health Organisation, ” says a statement from the ministry of health.
The proposed vaccination exercise comes in the aftermath of the death of two people in Masaka due to yellow fever disease. The ministry of health says that three people remain hospitalised due to yellow fever, two at Masaka regional referral hospital while another one is at Kebisoni health centre IV in Rukungiri district.
According to local news agency URN, two people died at the beginning of April and were residents of two parishes Kasaka and Mazinga in Buwunga sub-county.
Meanwhile, the ministry of health has reiterated the fact that all travelers in and out of the country MUST be vaccinated against Yellow Fever.
“No traveler shall be allowed into and out of the country without proof of vaccination.”
Currently, vaccination of yellow fever is available at four health facilities; I.e KCCA clinic at City hall in Kampala, Norvic hospital at Bombo road, Kazuri clinic at Entebbe International airport and the Surgery in Kololo.
Rift valley fever outbreak
Meanwhile the ministry says that so far only two cases of rift valley disease were confirmed last month in Kabale district.
“The first case earlier admitted at Mbarara regional referral hospital has been discharged while the second is still admitted at Kabale regional referral hospital,” says the ministry.
The ministry adds that over 655 human samples have been collected for testing at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe. So far, eight of the over 1000 animal samples tested have turned out positive.
