A healthy mind needs a healthy body. That is the latest word of counsel from President Yoweri Museveni.
Museveni told religious leaders to preach the gospel of healthy eating in their sermons, by emphasizing the importance of eating a balanced diet.
Museveni says majority of Ugandans eat less of essential foods necessary for a person’s growth, which endangers their health and lessens their longevity.
“The public does not know the amount of calories that someone needs to take. When I talk of calories I mean those foods that are found in proteins, carbohydrates, fats and salts which our bodies do need, so one needs to eat foods like Rice, Millet, cassava, Milk and meat every day,”
Museveni added: ”Milk has a lot of calcium and phosphorus which helps to strengthen the teeth and the bones.” Museveni made the remarks while launching a religious leaders initiative on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health at Kampala Serena hotel.
In what appeared to be a scientific lecture by a politician to the men of God, Museveni told them that a normal human being is supposed to consume at least 60 litres of milk every year. Ugandans however take less than a third of that, which is bad for our growth.
Museveni also decried the increase in prostitution which has escalated around Kampala streets.
“They go on kissing everyone and share sharp instruments like injections which spread diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B.”
Museveni threatened to imprison anyone who sabotages immunization programmes.
