The Constitutional Court will today hear an application seeking a temporary injunction against the approval of NRM’s newly appointed leaders including secretary general, a student of Kent University sued the NRM together with the Attorney General seeking to stop the approval of the nominated leaders.
The application is expected to be heard today by acting deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma.
The nominations were made after amendments to the party’s constitution which gave the chairman, President Museveni to appoint a secretary general, treasurer and their deputy.
The amendments eventual threw out Amama Mbabazi, who in September President Museveni sacked from his prime minister position.
Richard Todwong replaced Dorothy Hyuha whereas Rose Namayanja replaced Trade minister Amelia Kyambadde, and Kenneth Omona, the Kaberamaido MP replaced Singh Katongole.
Alipanga is seeking to annul the outcome of the recent NRM delegates’ conference, which key among them gave party chairman powers to appoint key secretariat leaders.
According to Alipanga, the outcomes of the December 15 delegates’ conference were unconstitutional and illegal.
The NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) had scheduled tomorrow [Thursday] as the day when the nominated leaders would be approved and sworn before beginning official party duties.
However, the approval is now dependent on the outcome of the court ruling.
The application, which seeks to temporarily block the swearing in of new leaders, pending the disposal of the main application was filed through Akampulira, & Co Advocates, Twinobusingye Severino, Muwema & Co Advocates and Solicitors and, JMM Advocates.
The main application is seeking for a total ban of the entire process.
