The Uganda Police Force has refuted media reports that military installations in the country are facing imminent attacks.
However, the Police confirmed reports that indeed various police installations are being targeted by rebels who want to steal guns.
The police said: “On the 28.12.2014, The Sunday Pepper had an alarming story on pages 1-3, with the headline, “Security on high alert over imminent attack”, where it went on to say “IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura reportedly alerted the force’s top management that an attack on military installations was imminent”.
The statement added: “The Police would like to inform the media and general public that there is much in the Sunday Pepper story that was seriously misconceived, which it refutes and wants to correct.
“IGP correctly said that there was serious evidence from reliable sources suggesting a risk of major attacks on police stations; which the police built on and stepped up its security vigilance and reinforcements.
The fact, however, still remains that police stations were being targeted for attack by suspected criminals, with the desire to cart away arms, but were defeated by our level of alertness and preparedness.
The Police also refuted claims by the same Paper that its chief was soon leaving the force.
Enanga reiterated the force’s preparedness to counter any attacks as it has done previously. “We have demonstrated our rapid response capabilities in the recent Rwenzori attacks where we successfully countered attacks against police. We will therefore, not hesitate to deal with potential criminals who still view the police as a vulnerable source for guns and ammunitions.”
