Sacked prime minister Amama Mbabazi has said he will spend more of his leave time reading and visiting with grandchildren.
Mbabazi, according to media reported was hounded into taking leave of party activities by the NRM Central Executive Committee during a two-day stormy meeting chaired by President Museveni at State House Nakasero, Kampala.
The meeting, which sat last Thursday and Saturday, according to reports, sought to deliberate on the sticky issue of Mbabazi’s perceived presidential ambition with a view of asking him to resign his secretary general position.
However, reports indicate, Mbabazi rejected the idea of resigning but was instead coerced into taking leave from party activities and handing over office to deputy secretary general Dorothy Hyuha.
Last month Museveni sacked Mbabazi from the position of prime minister sparking claims a fallout of the two NRM principals.
The sacking confirmed allegations, which claimed that Museveni had suspected his longtime ally of clandestinely mobilising support to stand against him in 2016.
However, analysts say Museveni might be mooting a channel through which he could legally throw out Mbabazi from the party’s key organs, adding his decision to call the party’s delegates conference on December 15 “is suspect”.
With Mbabazi out office until December 31, his deputy Dorothy Hyuha is expected to organize the conference.
The conference will also seek to amend parts of the NRM constitutions in order to give President Museveni powers to appoint a bureaucratic secretary general and party treasurer.
