The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has handed over the Nakasongola Airfield site to the Chief of Defense Forces, pavement and apron while the fire station will be repaired.
“Through a transparent procurement process, we expect EnergoProjekt to deliver quality work as stipulated in the contract,” Igundura said.
Nakasongola airfield is an army facility which was built in 1970s as the headquarters of the Uganda Air force. However, Igundura said, after rehabilitation, the airport will be available for commercial use as well.
“We are seeing this airport as an alternative to the ever increasing traffic on Entebbe airport,” added Igundura.
While perfoming a ground-breaking ceremony for the facility in Nakasongora, Gen. Wamala said the rehabilitation of the airfield has been delayed by wars which the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has been fighting in different parts of the region.
“UPDF has been fighting many wars where a lot of money has been spent. However, after securing peace in those areas, President Museveni directed that this project should start immediately,” Gen Wamala said.
He added that when the project is completed, it will be a safe place for the air force equipment as Entebbe Airbase is very congested and open. The airbase will also be used as an alternative airport in case of emergencies.
Maj. Gen. Samuel Turyagyenda, the Commander of Air Forces said the project which is to cost about Ushs 28 billion will bring back the glory of Nakasongola district as well as developing Uganda’s air transport industry.
“As per now, we have Gulu Airport as an alternative but once it is finished, it will be another alternative,” he said.
