Police has Tuesday blocked a procession of Opposition leaders seeking to deliver a petition to the DR Congo embassy in Kampala over the arrest of Sam Mugumya.
The leaders, former FDC president, Mathias Mpuuga, the Masaka Municipility MP, Asuman Basalirwa of Justice Forum, and Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Lord Mayor, among others were blocked as they led a procession to the DR Congo embassy to hand over a petition to H.E. Ambassador Charles Okoth.
The petition seeks for a status update on the arrest of Sam Mugumya and his where about.
The leaders, in a petition also wonder how the army in DR Congo had no status update on the arrest of a suspected rebel but the UPDF in Kampala had all the details pertaining to Mugumya’s detention.
Last week, the North Kivu military commander, Brig Gen Akili Muhindo confirmed DR Congo was holding Mugumya after he had been arrested over illegal entry into the country using pseudo names.
Gen Muhindo also said at hastily organised press briefing Mugumya would be transferred to Kinshasha as investigations continue.
Earlier Tuesday morning, police had deployed heavily at the DR Congo embassy after getting information that Opposition leaders were planning to deliver the petition.
Meanwhile, the ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala is investigating alleged death threats to DR Congo embassy officials over issuing information related to the arrest of Mugumya.
Fred Opolot, the ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the embassy had lodged a complaint relating to death threats over what the embassy said revealing contradictory information over the arrest of Mugumya.
