My nine year old son now knows how to kiss and romance a girl. Thanks to the television set in my house that has taught him such nice lessons. That TV in your sitting room has done a commendable job in your absence.
You no longer need to train your child how to play sex. Everything has been sorted by the home companion. Just relax because everything is under control.
The last time I attended a graduation party some kids below ten years were invited on the dance floor but I could not believe what I saw. The kids pulled out dancing strokes for popular music celebrities and professional dancers as if they are their siblings.
All dancing strokes and styles from dirty to obscene were exhibited by these little ones. While the crowd applauded them, I rested back in my chair soaked in worries of what the future has for young generation.
I heard my neighbor boasting that his kids can dance ‘bend over’ with eases. He went ahead to say that whenever he returns home his kids entertain him by dancing. He also goes back home with a prize to be won by the best dancer that night. This is how unconcerned parents can also be at the time when the media is feeding our children with rubbish.
Break -dancing was first created as a “less lethal” form of fighting between warring African-American street gangs in 1970s Bronx area of New York City. This form of dancing re-emerged into worldwide popularity during 1990s. If you think the late Michael Jackson was the best break dancer, you have not got the chance to see your own child doing it better. The TV has already taught him.
In the days when Uganda’s television screens were brimming with images of “Music Africa”, website “Inspector Derrick” and ‘flying House’ parents barely gave a second thought when their youngsters spent a couple hours in front of the tube.
But TV isn’t what it used to be. There are more than 100 channels available and much of the programming might send shock waves through parents. Violence and sexual images are as much a part of today’s television fare as peanut butter ads and infomercials.
There is need to protect children and families from graphic sex, violence and profanity in the media, because of their proven long-term harmful effects. If nobody appears to be concerned the parents themselves should start this revolution.
The tricky thing here is that parents are being requested to fight what they love most on TV; sex and violence. Please parents do it for the sake of your kids and the future ahead of them.
