Every year, Uganda joins the global aviation industry to mark the International Aviation Week. And the main events to commemorate the week take place in the first week of December of every year.

The specific dates were chosen to remember the memorable week of meetings that culminated into the signing of the famous Chicago Convention that established the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1944 as a specialized agency of the UN charged with coordinating and regulating international air travel.

The Convention establishes rules of airspace, aircraft registration and safety, and details the rights of the signatories in relation to air travel.

The annual celebrations are meant to create awareness about the importance of civil aviation in the economic and social development of countries. It is also a moment to take stock of the role of ICAO in promoting the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation.

2017 Theme;

The theme of this year’s international aviation week celebrations is: Working Together to Ensure No  Country is left Behind.

The theme highlights the crucial role played by ICAO in ensuring that all countries implement the universally accepted and agreed Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS). The key objective of the SARPS is to ensure that countries are well positioned to implement the rules in harmonised manner in order to achieve social economic benefits.

For Uganda, the International Aviation Week is used as an occasion to reflect on the achievements made, while also assessing the opportunities and challenges facing the country regarding the development of civil aviation, as well as evaluating our progress in the implementation of SARPS.
