Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe Thursday signaled she would join the race to replace Robert Mugabe when he leaves power.
Grace Mugabe, according to reports has been positioning herself to replace the ageing Mugabe, a scheme likely to polarize the party.
Speaking to liberation veterans in Mazowe, 40 kilometres north of Harere, TimesLive, an online news website quoted Grace Mugabe, saying: “People say I want to be president, why not? Am I not a Zimbabwean?”
Mugabe, now 90 years is said to have fallen out with his vice president Joice Mujuru, who has widely been regarded as one of the top contenders to succeed him.
Recently Mugabe has been asking Majuru, who is also the Zanu-PF secretary general to resign.
Grace Mugabe has also had run-ins with Majura, saying she cannot replace her husband.
“There are plenty of people who can run this country, not Mujuru,” she said, adding her husband’s deputy would take Zimbabwe “back to where we were before independence.”
