New Nokia smartphones will be called Microsoft Lumia, which acquired the Finnish firm decided to ditch the [Nokia] name.
Microsoft acquired Nokia’s mobile operation in April in a deal worth $7.2b about (about Shs19 trillion).
A post on Nokia France’s Facebook page confirmed the shift with Microsoft saying: “The renaming will roll out globally in due course.”
Social media sites branded as Nokia will also change with Nokia France being among the first countries to adopt “Microsoft Lumia” for its Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts.
The announcement comes despite Microsoft agreeing to a 10-year deal to use the Nokia name on mobile products.
Microsoft is currently undergoing a big shake-up with a July announcement by chief executive Satya Nadella, which said the firm would cut about 18,000 jobs.
The bulk of the cuts, about 12,500, will be from staff taken on after the acquisition.
Nokia’s non-mobile division, which is not owned by Microsoft, will continue to use the name.
