The Uganda Police Force has distanced itself to widely circulated reports that it issued a warning about a possible terrorist attack targeting Entebbe International Airport.
In a statement by the Acting Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, the Police say they are not the origin of information that was allegedly transmitted by the American Embassy to local and international media suggesting that Entebbe was being targeted.
“This is to clarify that the Uganda Police did not give any such specific information to the United States embassy about planned terror attacks on Entebbe International Airport.
“As the public knows, whenever there is an imminent terror threat on the country, the Police issues terror alerts. Had we found it necessary that there was such information that warranted the traveling public using Entebbe International Airport to be informed, Police would, similarly, have alerted the public.
Enanga however notes that Uganda, together with other countries in the region, face the daily threat of terrorism from such groups as the Al-Shabab and the ADF.
He said the police have put in place effective counter terrorism measures, especially at such vital installations as Entebbe International Airport, to ensure that those groups do not succeed in their evil plans.
The Police recently came out to dispel as rumours claims that were attributed to the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura, who reportedly told a local daily that Entebbe was a terrorist target, allegedly due to weak security measures.
A sense of fear has however gripped the people of Kampala city in recent days following a heavy presence of soldiers who are dressed in bush-like camouflage.
The police says however that it is working with sister security agencies to continuously, and on a daily basis, focuses on the threat of terrorism and evaluates whatever information relating to any possible attacks on the country.
Enanga assured the public, especially the travelling public who use Entebbe Internationa Airport that there is no cause for alarm because there are adequate and effective counter terrorism measures in place to deal with any threat to the Airport or any other place in Uganda.
