The wait seems to be over for the national census exercise.
The government of Uganda has finally released funds needed to conduct the all-important Census exercise following two successive postponements.
Uganda Bureau of Statistics has set 10 days starting August 28, this time, UBOS has decided that enumerators will be recruited from the very communities they are going to work in.
Nabongo said the move is aimed at building trust among communities members because respondents will be familiar with the enumerators.
Mashate said they prefer senior six as the minimum level of academic achievement for applicants to work as enumerators. However regions which may not be in position to provide enough S.6 graders, UBOS says it will accept those with S.4 documents.
Mashate further noted that they have finished sensitizing a number of stakeholders including the clergy, district leaders, Members of Parliament who expressed support to mobilize their respective constituencies to actively participate in the exercise.
Uganda last conducted a National Population and Housing Census in 2002 and was one of the very few countries that had not undertaken a Census in a period of ten years.
This year’s Census will be the tenth since Uganda started conducting Censuses in 1912. The Census is expected to take place during the holiday of the second school term and therefore it is expected that teachers may take up the opportunity to engage in the exercise.
Mashate urged all Ugandans to provide accurate information to enable the government and other agencies that need data for proper planning.
