NRM youth leaders have threatened to boycott their party’s National Delegates Conference if parliament does not amend the National Youth Act to include the procedure for their elections in a week’s time.
The youth made the utterance during a press Conference at The National Theater before they handed a petition to the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga this week.
“We are giving our Members of Parliament one week to do this amendment or else we shall not participate in the forth coming NRM National Delegates Conference, the aspiring National NRM youth chairman,” Gadaffi said.
They have also threatened to ignore parliamentary elections where they have famously played a crucial role in mobilizing grassroot support for NRM MPs in past elections.
There is no way Members of Parliament are going to come and ask us to mobilize support for them when they have not been of use to us at a time like this when we need them most.” said Sarah Babirye, one of the aspiring Youth MPs in the Central region.
Reading the petition to the journalists, the National Youth secretary for external relations Davis Akampurira justified the youth’s outcry on grounds that no procedure exists “since provisions establishing District youth councils which form the Electoral College were declared unconstitutional.”
” We the representatives of the young people call upon the government particularly the speaker of parliament of Uganda to urgently urge members of the August House to table amendments to the respective laws on how youth Members of Parliament are elected ” Partly reads the petitions.
This follows a constitutional court ruling last week which rendered representatives of special interest groups of the youth, Workers and UPDF the constitutional.
