Every year, Muslims around the world commemorate Eid Al-Adha with an important activity of slaughtering animals. They do this to try to emulate and remember the great sacrifice and obedience to Allah that was made by Prophet  Ibraham – considered as the grandfather of believers. The decision by Prophet Ibraham to sacrifice his own son, whom he obtained at a very advanced age, as well as his son’s acceptance to be slaughtered as a way to allow his father fulfil his pledge to God, is considered as the epitome of obedience toGod.

Many believers in the world slaughter animals starting from the 10th day in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah until the 12th day.

Here in Uganda, a few people sacrifice animals to emulate Prophet Ibraham. Many others however use the occasion to feast of the meat that is given to them free of charge.

And so, it was under that atmosphere that hundreds of thousands of Ugandans celebrated this year’s Eid al-Adha.

A number of organisations gave out meat to thousands of Ugandanns at different points across the country.

The Muslim World League, through its local branch located at Old Kampala, distributed meat to over 2000 less privileged persons. The beneficiaries included both muslims and non-muslims.

Over the years, The Muslim World League has remained true to this tradition of donating meat to people.

While officiating at the donation, Jabir Ali Ashahri the Acting Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said that over sixty (60) cows were slaughtered for the event.

“We have carried out sacrifices in different parts of Uganda, Including Adjumani, Arua, Jinja, Kyotera, Kalangala islands and Kampala,” he said.

He added that the Embassy of Saudi Arabia shall continue to offer sacrifice to all less privileged communities in future.

By 03:00pm, residents had thronged the entrance of the MWL Offices to get a share of the meat.

One beneficiary identified only as Lukiya, expressed happiness at MWL’s gesture to cater for the poor.

“For the past three years I have been getting this meat. In fact I am happy that we the poor also enjoy the day,” she said.

Al-Hajj General Moses Ali who presided over the occasion thanked the Muslim World League for the relief they have extended to Ugandans in different parts of the country especially on Eid days

“We are happy that we are one of the Member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Muslim league. We pray that this hospitality is extended far and longer to all parts of the country,” he said.
