The Uganda Poor Youth Association (UPYA) have tasked the Committee Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) led by the Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa to push for action in response to recommendations that were made by his predecessors before thinking of fresh investigations.
After receiving numerous complaints about the closure of the seven commercial banks by the Central Bank of Uganda, COSASE led by the Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu opened up investigations in December last year and concluded by writing a final report in February 2019.
The seven banks are Teefe Trust Bank, International Credit Bank, Cooperative Bank, Greenland Bank, Global Trust Bank Uganda, National Bank of Commerce and Crane Bank Limited. The committee based on the Section 13 (3) of the National Audit Act, 2008 that empowers the Parliament or the Minister to request the Auditor General to conduct a special audit and to make a special audit report.
Addressing the press in Kampala today, Zahid Ssempala the spokesperson of the UPYA said that it was the right of Ugandans to know the progress of the implementation of the report.
“We don’t want to see another tax payer’s money being wasted that they are reinvestigation so the committee should push up for recommendations,” he said.
Babu Ssali, the head of the legal team at the UPYA said that there was a plot to re-investigate the BOU which, he said, they would not allow
He added that they, as the UPYA, want the law to deal with the main suspects in the probe.
