The current diplomatic spat between Rwanda and Uganda will not stop students from the neighbouring country from graduating, if they cleared with the academic registrar, the university’s vice chancellor has confirmed.
Prof. Badru Kateregga said that the university does not insist on physical presence of a student to complete graduation.
Prof. Kateregga said: “Either you graduate in person or you graduate in absentia. They will graduate as long as they appear in the book.”
He made the remarks while addressing a news conference about Kampala University’s 16th graduation ceremony which is scheduled for March 7. The university will also celebrate 20 years of the existence of its main campus at Gaba.
The University is set to graduate 3,352 students in different disciplines. Of the grandaunts, 1,820 are Ugandans, 475 South Sudanese, 311 from Somalia, 207 are Kenyans, 187 are Rwandan, 139 are Tanzanians, 24 are Burundians, 11 Ethiopians, 4 Congolese, 2 Liberians and 1 is Djiboutian.
Kateregga urged other institutions of higher learning to inject more funds into research on both innovative research and science and Technology noting that Uganda’s future depends on the proper teaching of disciplines that promote innovativeness and problem solving.
“Allow me to remind the general public that the future of Uganda and indeed other countries depends on proper teaching of science and technology, innovative research at all levels,” said Kateregga.
The 16th graduation ceremony will be graced by her highness the Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda – the Wife of Buganda Monarch Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, as the chief guest.
