Parliaments Imam Latif Sssebaggala
Police have cancelled the National Special Jumah prayers that were to be held on today Friday January 18, 2019, at Kololo on grounds that they were not sanctioned by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo, the MP for Kawempe North and also the Imam of Parliament had organized organized the prayers in protests against police brutality towards Muslims
In a statement, the Police said: “The prayer will not take place after it was established that the religious gathering which was being organized by Parliamentary Imam was not cleared by Uganda Muslim Supreme council, the Supreme body legally mandated to oversee all activities of Islamic faith in Uganda”
The Police asked the organizers to secure another date upon harmonising the request with the Uganda Muslim body and also cautioned upon holding any religious event without police clearance.
Ssebaggala, through his social media platforms subsequently stated: “Our continued efforts to hold a national Jumah day has been frustrated by Uganda Police as well as a few enemies of unity amongst Uganda Muslims.”
He added: “We being peace loving Ugandans decided to accept the decision by the security forces and abide by their resolutions. The struggle to fight for equality for Muslims is far from over. I have presented these issues on the floor of parliament and to various stakeholders. We shall overcome one day.”
