December 4, 2018 was the night during which Uganda’s legend Diplock Segawa had to show that he still had a lot to offer and he did it in style. He completed the definition of a legendary live performance. This was at the National Theatre as he celebrated 35 years of Sooka Omunonye, a song that became an anthem on traditional weddings and at modern receptions.
Sooka omunonye, loosely translated as “search for him or her,” saw Diplock’s concert manifest its meaning as it ushered in the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Janat Mukwaya, Sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi, Uganda National Cultural Centre’s Executive Director Francis Peter Ojede, Asst. Commissioner for Culture Eunice Tumwebaze, Commissioner for Youth and Children Affairs Francis Kyateka Mondo and many others.
The show started at 7pm with a band performance, Happy Kyazze on the Saxophone, Aloysius Migadde on the guitar and others. After that appetizer, segawa’s backup singers graced the stage and helped the audience get ready for the main show.
Diplock then joined the stage, performing the Nkomyewo song. His exhilarating performance could make you feel his presence. Indeed Diplock is back. The live band, dancers and angelic vocalists that featured were great icing on the cake.
His songs were both educative and entertaining. From Nkomyewo to Ekyakutwala, and to people’s favourite Sooka Omunoonye, one would mistake a Tuesday for a weekend.
