The Ministry of Health will next Tuesday June 26, unveil a new vaccination against diarrhea in children.
The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine said the launch of the Rota-virus vaccination will take place in Buikwe district.
The introduction of the Rota-virus is aimed at enhancing prevention efforts and hence the cost of treating diseases in the country.
Atwine noted that Rota-virus will be availed at all government health facilities and given to all children ranging from Day one up to 11 year olds.
She said that Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of infant mortality in Uganda.
According to Dr. Bernard Opar Toliva, the Program Manager Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunization (UNEPI), the Rotavirus will reduce diarrhea cases by up to 40 percent.
“It works effectively with proper hygiene and sanitation, the introduction of rota virus vaccine will contribute to significantly reduction infant mortality.”
PS complains about poor immunization
Atwine however expressed dissatisfaction with the way some people especially in Kampala evade immunization.
“I think we need to introduce by-laws in order to force people for example in Kampala.”
Meanwhile, Atwine says the Ministry plans to accelerate the vaccination of the population against Hepatitis B in Bugisu and the Central region.
