Manchester City are the 2017-18 Premier League champions. City clinched the title, rather surprisingly when rivals West Bromwich Albion beat Manchester United at home.
Manchester City have won the Premier League title with five games remaining- equalling the English top-flight record. Having created a 16-point gap, City were out of touch for the title.
Manchester United last achieved the feat the 2000-2001 season while Everton did the same in 1984-85.
It Hurts
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I think there’s no excuses. It was a bad day for everyone and a bad result. We’re disappointed and we understand the fans’ situation. It was a slow game and we didn’t play well at all.
“After last week we wanted to keep going with the same spirit. We didn’t’ create enough chances. They are fighting for survival but there’s no excuses.”
On handing City the title: “It hurts. Basically we didn’t do our job today which was winning. Our aim is to keep second position and it’s not done yet. Today was a bad day and we need to move on.
“We had a few days to rest and prepare but football is unpredictable and sometimes things happen. We’re sad and disappointed with ourselves.”
Got Carried Away
According to reports by the bbc, United manager Jose Mourinho argued that some of his players got carried away by last week’s 3-2 win at Manchester City.
He said: “Probably because I won eight championships, I was not over the moon with the victory against them (City) because that doesn’t make me feel super happy and in my opinion affected for sure some of the people that was too happy.”
