The Islamic University in Uganda is 30 years old this year. The 30-years anniversary celebrations to be held next month, are testament to the steady stewardship of Uganda’s first non-government owned university.

IUIU’s long journey started in 1988 with just 80 students and two faculties following the decision by the government of President Yoweri Museveni to liberalize the higher education sector.

Today, the university has risen to become one of the most formidable education institutions in tne country with students holding important positions in both political and un political offices.

Some of IUIU’s biggest visible products include highly qualified individuals working in diverse fields as Members of Parliament, Judges, Teachers and Lecturers among others.

The Rector of IUIU Dr. Ahmed Kaweesa Sengendo told The Sunrise that the main celebrations will be held at the main campus in Mbale, with the view to taking stoke of achievements and challenges experienced over the past 30 years.

Dr. Sengendo observes that IUIU now boasts over 10,000 students, seven faculties and over 70 academic programmes. It has trained many students from a number of countries in English, Arabic and French.

The University will dedicate a whole week in which several activities will take place. Many people including the Alumni will be awarded for their development of the IUIU.

The University will invite many dignitaries from outside the country to attend the celebrations.
