38 US Peace Corps Volunteers were this week sworn-in by the American Ambassador to Uganda who urged communities among whom they will be staying for the next couple of weeks to welcome them with warmth and hospitality known of Ugandans.
Ambassador Scott DeLisi made the appeal as he presided over the swearing-in ceremony for all the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) at his residence in Kampala.
The volunteers will serve in the education sector, learner assessment, managing large class sizes, and creating learning aides from local resources.
The Volunteers will now proceed to sites across the country to begin their roles as Literacy Specialists in primary schools and Teacher Trainers at Primary Teachers Colleges.
They will work hand in hand with primary teachers, Head Teachers, Tutors, and Principals to build the capacity of local educators, promote a culture of reading, and increase early literacy skills by conducting reading interventions, holding teacher workshops, teaching content areas, developing school libraries, and supervising pre-service teachers.
In his remarks, Ambassador Scott DeLisi said, “To the people of Uganda, and to our local community partners in particular, and I want to tell you how much we appreciate your engagement and support.
Ambassador DeLisi added: “We entrust our volunteers to your care and know that they will be received with the warmth and hospitality that reflects well on all Ugandans. You make them part of your communities and your families, and your engagement with them makes our volunteers’ experience in your beautiful country productive and life-changing. This is part of the beauty, and the magic, of the Peace Corps experience and reflects the spirit of partnership that makes the program so successful.”
